Exploring and Evaluating the Learning Environment
Observing, reflecting and comparing different learning spaces to support all learners
These tasks deepen your understanding of how physical, emotional, and psychological factors shape the learning environment. You will apply observation and reflective thinking to evaluate a range of learning spaces, considering how each one supports, or gets in the way of, learner safety, wellbeing, and engagement.
You will work through a self-directed sequence that includes observation, reflective writing, and an optional creative summary using audio or visual formats. As you observe, try to be specific in your comparisons - rather than noting that a space was "good" or "bad," think about what made it that way: was it well-lit but noisy? Spacious but lacking a sense of belonging? Consider both the physical elements of a space, such as layout, seating, and light, and the emotional and psychological ones, such as how safe or welcome learners feel and the quality of adult-learner relationships.
If you do not have easy access to a school this week, you can complete the observation tasks using a Google image search instead. As a reminder, please do not take photos of learners or staff.
